River Rangers – Canning Weir Excursion

On Friday 27 October, our River Rangers team of Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to visit the Canning River Eco Education Centre. The team was thrilled to participate in the ‘Weir-d Science’ activity, which was aimed at enhancing their knowledge of the environment, and also explore the Canning River Regional Park Trail.

This term in River Rangers, the students have been keen on exploring human infrastructure in rivers and the impact it has had on ecosystems and the geography of the land. During the ‘Weir-d Science’ session, the River Rangers had a chance to ask questions, and the experience provided insights into how living things in the Canning River have adapted to changes in their physical environment over nearly 100 years since the Weir was built.

The session was an eye-opener for the students as they got to compare fresh and saltwater ecosystems by conducting salinity tests on either side of the weir. They also got to map changes to the vegetation along the river, providing them with a deeper understanding of the environment around them. Overall, the visit was a success as it was both insightful and fascinating, leaving the River Rangers team with unforgettable memories.
